If fungal infections are left untreated, they can become obstinate and resistant to treatment. The fungi that cause this infection typically infests in regions that are warm, damp, and poorly ventilated such as the feet, groin, and underarms. In addition to these infections, other strains of fungi can also infect the nails, scalp (tinea capitis), and in some extreme cases, even internal organs (especially the ones who have compromised immune systems). Fungi infections are common and can affect various parts of the body. For example, athlete’s foot can result in dry, cracked, and peeling skin between the toes. Ringworm, on the other hand, causes round, red patches with raised edges and a clearer center. While yeast infections primarily occur under skin folds in the genital area, they can lead to severe itching, burning sensation, and also white discharge. Not only this, but some forms of nail fungi infection can result in thickening, discoloration, and brittleness of the nails. Fungal infections are rarely life-threatening, however, in the event that you do not treat them properly, they can lead to severe complications. Prolonged or improperly treated infections can allow the fungus to spread to other regions of body or penetrate deeper layers of your skin and worsen your condition. Those suffering from a weakened immune system like diabetics or HIV patients are more vulnerable to developing systemic or widespread issues if an infection is not treated timely. The treatment of these infections is based on the specific type and severity of the infection. For superficial infections, topical antifungal treatments like creams ointments or sprays are usually adequate. However, oral antifungal medication needs to be administered in case of a more extensive or severe infection. With cases like toenail and fingernail infections, treatment can take weeks to months and recurring infections are common. If you notice early signs of an infection, seeking medical advice in a timely manner is crucial to treating an infection from worsening or spreading further. Preventive measures provide the best solution while dealing with such infections and recurring outbreaks. Good hygiene needs to be practiced such as regular wiping and washing of the skin as well as using shoes and clothing that wick out moisture and let the skin breathe.
